The BBC Globe balloon is a Cameron 105 Sphere built in 1997 for the BBC for their idents on TV, filmed at numerous locations and in the days before computer editing kicked off! The Globe was originally going to be blue and green, like the actually world globe. But they soon recognised that this wouldn't work with the back drop also being blue and green, so it was suggested they go with the opposite colours that were yellow and red so it stood out from the back drop.
The Globe was retired in 2002 and went to a ballooning preservation group, and after being kept in various storages over the years was found and turned up at the collection. So we decided, and with help from Mark Lockwood (the guy who designed and ran operations for it back in 1997) that we would seek the BBC's approval to get globe out once again. After getting the BBC's approval we started to give the Globe some TLC, it went back to Cameron Balloons to have the mouth repaired, with thanks to Don Cameron and the team for doing this for us, then we attempted to clean and re paint the clouds on the lower half of the balloon, before the summer events in 2023. |
